Program Philosophy
Northern Maine Learning Center (NMLC) believes that all students can learn, achieve at high standards, and have abilities and talents that are worthy of being identified and supported. The development of a disabled student as an independent and confident learner requires instructional methodology that is individualized and structured to capitalize on student’s strengths.
Individualized Instruction
Student instruction is aligned with the Maine Learning Results and is delivered through the use of a variety of methodologies. Lessons are individualized based on each student’s learning strengths and may be tailored to accommodate functional, applied, or highly academic needs and goals.
Hands-On-Learning
For those students who have been unsuccessful in traditional classroom settings, NMLC utilizes a hands-on approach that integrates academic, social, behavioral, and post-secondary transition skills learning. Students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, cooperative attitudes, and appreciation for individual and cultural differences.
Behavioral/Social/Emotional Support
The Northern Maine Learning Center’s behavior support system is an integral part of our psycho - educational treatment approach designed to provide each student the opportunity and supports necessary to learn in the least restrictive educational environment possible. Through the utilization of a positive, well defined set of expectations and system of rewards and logical consequences, it is our belief that students will be able to safely and successfully work towards the goals and objectives identified in their individual educational programs.
Social work services are integrated throughout all aspects of the program and school day. Licensed professionals provide individual and group counseling, parent collaboration, and agency/community resource networking.
Transitional Planning & Development
Ultimately, transition planning is about students leaving school and entering into independent living, the work force, or other post-secondary scenarios. NMLC is committed to supporting students explore and prepare for healthy and positive outcomes. Through the use of research based vocational and aptitude assessment methods, the proven "Career Choices" curriculum, community integration and partnerships, and vocational exploration, students begin to understand and develop the skills needed to identify and achieve their life goals.
