Rumney House Party

July, 2009, Becket House at Rumney

It might have been raining, it might have been chilly, but the party was still on at Becket House at Rumney! On Wednesday July 1st Rumney was host to the first ever get together for the students in the Sexual Behavior Modification Program. Students arrived from the Lafayette and K2 communities from Mount Prospect Academy in the afternoon and met with friends they hadn’t seen since the beginning of vacation. Even better: students met new people and made connections that will stay with them as they continue to grow in the program. Students and faculty mixed and mingled—holding a pool tournament, playing ping-pong, board games and showing off Rumney House. The evening ended with a great barbecue, potato salad, chips, and Dirt Cake. Everyone had a great time, made new friends and visited with old ones.

Rumney's First Campfire of the Summer

July, 2009, Becket House at Rumney

Rumney inaugurated its fire pit for the first time this summer on July 3rd. Students had spent the last two weeks under the supervision of Community Leader Mike learning how to create a safe space to have a camp fire. When the rains let up Friday night, students and faculty were able to coax a cheerful blaze out of wood collected. Faculty discussed the dangers of an open fire, as well as the skills for putting one together and maintaining a campfire while enjoying the outdoors. Marshmallows were roasted on sticks and thoroughly enjoyed. Hopefully, the summer will be full of many campfires and great community gatherings.

Earth Week at Rumney House

April, 2009, Becket House at Rumney

Heat Image during Rumney House Earth WeekApril vacation at Rumney House spent the week dedicated to the environment. In honor of Earth Day, students researched and put together a variety of projects to share with their peers. Some included Travis’ diorama of the Earth and Cody’s presentation on various types of energy. Other events included a student-driven effort to decrease power usage, promote recycling and the use of energy efficient materials in the house. Students also went out into the community to help clean up roadside debris.

Vacation week culminated with an educational trip to Boston. Students traveled to the Museum of Science where they spent the day exploring exhibits, learning about nature and their relationship with the world around them. Everyone agreed that the museum was a fantastic way to highlight their experience of Earth Day and they look forward to keeping their “green” efforts a part of their daily lives.

Presentation of Autobiographies

October, 2008, Becket House at Rumney

Presentation of Autobiographies at Becket House at Rumney

On October 29, 2008, the Becket House at Rumney students participated in the annual “Presentation of Autobiographies.”  Students began the process in early August by developing their autobiographies through group therapy sessions three times a week. As October came closer, students worked diligently on their autobiographies outside of group therapy, often late into the evenings, in preparation of the October 29th presentation night.

Courage, bravery, and fortitude showed through with all of the hard work and effort students put into preparing and presenting their “life story.”   The process of developing and presenting their autobiographies not only validates each student’s life story, but also assists them in their progress through the Sexual Behavior Modification Pathway.  The autobiographies also further develops a student’s understanding of their past life experiences, the offense cycle and the circumstances which led up to their offenses.  Often, upon completion of their autobiographies, students may then move towards the final phase in treatment; Phase IV:  Transition and Leadership of the Sexual Behavior Modification Pathway.

Becket House at RumneyThe Becket House at Rumney was packed on October 29th with fellow students, staff and friends eager to support the boys in bravely sharing their life stories.  In closure of the evening, all thirteen students received a certificate of completion and accomplishment for preparing and presenting their autobiography with a Becket House at Rumney T-shirt.   Appreciation and acknowledgement goes to all the Rumney House staff for their support and effort in assisting the students in the development of their autobiographies and in making this event such a momentous evening. A special thank you goes to Linda-Mary Montminy, Clinical Director at Becket House at Rumney, for her caring and generous guidance to all the Rumney students.
